Charles Mantis, the alter ego of Chicago trumpeter Gerald Bailey, creates beat-forward sensual anti-tech nature music with musicians from Chicago and beyond. Mantis’ musical sensibility beckons a swell of nostalgia and swagger; the films of Godard, Brazin, and Truffaut of the French New Wave come to mind, seamlessly blending the images of the recent past with the music of the present.
As a sideman, Bailey has played trumpet with Belle and Sebastian, Mumford and Sons, the Walkmen, the O’Jays, Sound Tribe Sector 9, K’jon, Syl Johnson, Jody Watley, Richie Cole, JC Brooks, Stephen Paul Smoker, the Drastics and Black Bear Combo. He also contributed trumpet to Moongriffin‘s Cartilage Osseux debut, “Glimpse of Future.”
