Self-exile from jazz worlds

Strongsender is a trio of musicians with a highly realized and dark vision… stemming from deep within the improvised, chamber, and electronic music scenes across several cities.

Thomas Faulds (machines/drums) Elliot Ross (guitars/synths) and Charles Gorczynski (woodwinds/synths) all met in Chicago while working in the city’s active underground jazz world. The three gravitated towards each other because of shared aesthetics in composition, improvisation, and integrated electronics, as well as a shared obsessive work ethic and similar record collections. For a decade all three worked in dozens of groups, playing and touring with projects like Colorlist (482 Music, Serein), Silences Sumire (Ropeadope), Kibosh, and pick-up outfits around the city to experiment with different ideas in writing and performing. As the years moved forward the side projects fell away as they collectively became more focused, darker and assured.

One particular side project brought the three together in a Madlib / J Dilla inspired live jazz group, releasing one album and doing a handful of shows in town. As the project developed it suddenly became much heavier on the electronics, shedding the initial intentions of the band. Over time the group started to embrace more challenging influences: their shared love for Autechre and modern sound design, the influential beat scene in LA… opening up to an honest and new sound that was miles away from their roots in the free jazz scene. This was all relentlessly developed for years as they pushed themselves farther and farther away from perceived limits anywhere. It grew into a monstrous body of work and eventually into something completely unrecognizable: Strongsender.

Currently Strongsender is based in three cities. Faulds spearheads and directs the music out of Chicago, Gorczynski doubles as a tango musician in Oakland, and Ross owns and operates a revolutionary music school in Portland. Despite the distance, or maybe because of it, strongsender writes massive amounts of material remotely by passing from studio to studio. The group also regularly meets to record new work together, each time pushing the concept farther out and into unknown places.

Strongsender makes visceral and hallucinatory music that lies well beyond any comfortable limits.

The upcoming Exiles is the debut LP for Strongsender, a proper vinyl release on the heels of their short and brutal Executive EP for Portland’s Cartilage Osseaux Records.
